HRA exemption calculator

HRA exemption is the lowest of three amounts: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic salary, and 50% of basic salary in metro cities or 40% elsewhere. Enter yearly figures to see the exempt and taxable HRA.

Points to note

  • HRA exemption is available only under the old regime.
  • For HRA, Noida and Greater Noida are treated as non-metro, so the 40% limit applies.
  • Keep rent receipts and a rent agreement. The landlord’s PAN is usually needed when annual rent crosses the specified limit.
  • If you live in your own house, you cannot claim HRA for it.
