What is income tax planning?
Tax planning means looking at your income and spending early in the year and making choices that reduce tax within the rules: which regime to choose, which deductions to claim, when to sell an asset, and how much advance tax to pay. It is different from tax evasion, which is illegal, and from last-minute investing in March, which often leads to poor financial choices.
For salaried people, the main decision is usually the regime. The new regime has lower slab rates and few deductions; the old regime allows deductions such as 80C investments, health insurance, HRA and home loan interest. The better option depends on your actual numbers, not a rule of thumb.
For business owners and professionals, planning covers presumptive taxation, salary versus drawings for partners and directors, timing of capital expenditure, and advance tax instalments. For anyone selling property or shares, it covers the timing of the sale and available exemptions.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026. Some provisions and section numbers have changed, so plans for the current tax year are checked against the new law.
Who benefits from tax planning?
Tax planning is most useful if:
- Your salary has increased and you are unsure which regime is better
- You are buying or selling a flat in Greater Noida West this year
- You pay rent and want to claim HRA correctly, or have a home loan
- You are a freelancer or professional choosing between presumptive and regular taxation
- You hold shares or mutual funds and plan to sell
- You have to pay advance tax and want to avoid interest

Which documents are needed for tax planning?
Share what applies to you:
| Document | Salaried | Business / professional |
|---|---|---|
| Income | Salary slip or CTC structure, previous Form 16 | Last year’s ITR and current year income estimate |
| Investments | 80C, NPS, health insurance statements | Same |
| Housing | Rent receipts or home loan interest certificate | Same |
| Capital assets | Share and mutual fund statements, property purchase deed | Same, plus business assets |
| Tax paid | TDS details from AIS | Advance tax paid so far |
| Plans | Expected purchases, sales or bonuses | Expected capital expenditure, new contracts |
How long does tax planning take?
A written plan is usually ready within 2–3 working days. These factors add time:
- Several income sources, such as rental, business and capital gains together
- Property sales that need purchase cost and improvement records
- NRI or foreign income questions
- Business income where current-year books are not updated
From you, we need current-year income figures and investment statements, and an update if your situation changes mid-year. Book a consultation call to discuss your case.

Common tax planning mistakes and key dates
- Investing only in March. Last-minute products may not suit your goals and may not even reduce tax under the new regime.
- Choosing the regime by habit. The better regime can change when salary or deductions change.
- Missing advance tax. Advance tax is due in instalments during the year; shortfalls attract interest.
- Selling assets without checking timing. Holding periods and reinvestment windows affect capital gains tax.
- Claiming HRA without proof. Rent receipts and the landlord’s PAN may be required.
| Item | Usual date |
|---|---|
| Advance tax, 1st instalment | 15 June |
| Advance tax, 2nd instalment | 15 September |
| Advance tax, 3rd instalment | 15 December |
| Advance tax, final instalment | 15 March |
| Investment proofs to employer | Usually January to March |
Old vs new tax regime: which suits you?
| Point | New regime | Old regime |
|---|---|---|
| Slab rates | Lower | Higher |
| Deductions | Very few (standard deduction, employer NPS) | 80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and others |
| Default | Yes | Must be chosen |
| Best for | People with few deductions | People with large deductions |
| Switching | Salaried can choose each year; business income has restrictions | Same |
