What is an income tax refund?
When the tax deducted or paid during the year is more than your actual tax liability, the difference is refundable. Common examples are TDS deducted on FD interest when your income is below the taxable limit, excess TDS by an employer, or tax paid on a property sale where exemptions were later claimed.
You claim the refund by filing your ITR and e-verifying it. The department processes the return, issues an intimation, and credits the refund directly to a pre-validated bank account linked to your PAN. Interest may be paid on refunds in some cases.
Refunds get stuck for predictable reasons: the bank account is not validated, the name does not match PAN, the return has not been e-verified, figures differ from AIS or Form 26AS, or an old demand is adjusted against the refund. Each has a specific fix on the portal.
Who needs help with a refund?
You should get help if:
- Your return was processed but the refund has not been credited
- The refund status shows “failed” or asks you to update bank details
- The intimation shows a lower refund than you claimed
- An old demand has been adjusted against your refund
- You missed claiming a refund and want to know if it can still be filed
- You are an NRI or pensioner with excess TDS and unsure how to claim it

These help us find the cause quickly:
| Document | Salaried / pensioner | Business / professional |
|---|---|---|
| Return | ITR acknowledgement and computation | Same |
| Intimation | Intimation after processing, if received | Same |
| Tax credit | Form 26AS and AIS | Same, plus TDS certificates from clients |

| Portal access | Login or OTP when needed | Same |
How long does an income tax refund take?
Our review and action usually take 1–3 working days. The refund itself depends on department processing. These factors add time:
- A return that is under processing or selected for review
- TDS not yet reflected because the deductor has not filed or has made errors
- Bank account changes that need fresh validation
- Adjustment against an old demand that needs a response
From you, we need portal access or OTPs, your bank details, and copies of any intimation or demand. Book a consultation call to discuss your case.

Common reasons refunds are delayed or reduced
- Not e-verifying the return. An unverified return is not processed.
- Bank account not pre-validated. Refunds are credited only to validated accounts.
- Claiming TDS not in Form 26AS. Credit is given only for TDS reflected in the department’s records.
- Ignoring an adjustment notice. You usually have a set time to respond before an old demand is adjusted.
- Missing the filing deadline. Late returns may still get refunds, but some options are lost.
| Item | Usual rule |
|---|---|
| E-verification | Within 30 days of filing |
| Belated return | Up to 31 December after the financial year |
| Response to adjustment proposal | Within the time stated in the communication, usually 30 days |
| Rectification | Can be filed for mistakes apparent from the record |
