What is an FSSAI food licence?
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every food business operator must be registered or licensed with FSSAI. The 14-digit FSSAI number must be displayed at the premises and printed on food packaging and menus.
Small businesses get Basic registration. Larger businesses need a State licence, and the largest or those operating across states, importing or exporting need a Central licence. Applications are filed on the FoSCoS portal.
State and Central licences may involve an inspection of the premises. Licence holders must follow hygiene and labelling rules and, for licences, file annual returns where applicable. Registration and licences are valid for one to five years and must be renewed before expiry.
Who needs an FSSAI licence?
You need FSSAI registration or a licence if you:

How long does FSSAI registration take?
Basic registration is usually issued in 7–15 days. Licences take longer. These factors add time:
- Inspection scheduling for State and Central licences
- Wrong food categories that need correction
- Premises documents missing or mismatched
- Additional NOCs for certain food categories
