What is income tax return filing?
An income tax return is a form in which you report everything you earned in a financial year: salary, rent, interest, capital gains, business profit and any other income. You also report the deductions you claim and the tax already paid through TDS, advance tax or self-assessment tax. The Income Tax Department uses the return to work out whether you owe more tax or should get a refund.
Returns are filed online on the Income Tax e-filing portal. There are several ITR forms, and the right one depends on the type and amount of income you have. Filing the wrong form is one of the most common reasons a return is marked defective.
Filing is complete only after you e-verify the return, usually with an Aadhaar OTP. Until then, the department treats it as not filed.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026 and replaces terms such as “previous year” and “assessment year” with “tax year”. Returns for income earned up to 31 March 2026 follow the earlier framework. We confirm which rules apply to your return on the consultation call.
Who needs to file an ITR?
You should file a return if any of these apply to you:
- Your total income before deductions is above the basic exemption limit.
- TDS was deducted from your salary, FD interest or rent and you want the excess back as a refund.
- You sold a flat, plot, shares or mutual funds during the year, including at a loss you want to carry forward.
- You hold foreign assets or earn income outside India.
- You run a business or practise a profession, including freelancing and consulting.
- You crossed specified limits, such as high deposits in a current account, high foreign travel spend or high electricity bills.
- You need ITR acknowledgements as income proof for a home loan, visa or tender.

How long does ITR filing take?
A salaried return with one Form 16 is usually filed within 1–2 working days of receiving complete documents. These factors add time:
- Several income sources, such as two employers in one year or rental income
- Mismatches between Form 16 and AIS that need to be explained or corrected
- Capital gains on a property or share sale, which need purchase costs and indexation checks
- Business income where books of accounts are not ready
From you, we need complete documents, access to the e-filing portal (or an OTP when we ask for it), and a quick confirmation of the tax summary we send. Book a consultation call to discuss your case.

Common ITR mistakes, penalties and due dates
- Wrong ITR form. The return can be marked defective and must be corrected within the time given.
- Leaving out savings or FD interest. This income appears in AIS and often leads to a mismatch notice.
- Picking a regime without comparing. The new regime is the default; the old regime may still suit people with large deductions.
- Not e-verifying. A return not verified within 30 days of filing is treated as not filed.
- Ignoring a flat sale. Property sales are reported by the registrar and show up in your AIS.
| Item | Usual rule |
|---|---|
| Due date, individuals without audit | 31 July after the end of the financial year |
| Due date, accounts requiring audit | 31 October after the end of the financial year |
| Belated or revised return | 31 December after the end of the financial year |
| Updated return (ITR-U) | Within 48 months from the end of the relevant assessment year, with additional tax |
| Late filing fee | Up to ₹5,000; up to ₹1,000 if total income is ₹5 lakh or less |
| Interest | Charged on unpaid tax for late filing and shortfall in advance tax |
