What is an income tax notice reply?
The Income Tax Department sends notices and intimations when it needs information, finds a mismatch, or has processed your return with a difference. Most are issued electronically, appear in the e-proceedings section of the e-filing portal and are also sent by email and SMS.
Not every notice means you did something wrong. Many are routine: an intimation after processing, a request to confirm a high-value transaction, or a note that the return is defective because a schedule is missing. Others, such as a demand or an enquiry into unreported income, need a careful written response with evidence.
A good reply answers exactly what the notice asks, attaches the right proof, and stays consistent with your return and the department’s data in AIS and Form 26AS. A hurried reply can create new questions, while no reply can lead to a demand being confirmed or a best-judgement assessment.
Under the Income-tax Act, 2025, section numbers referred to in notices have changed for new proceedings. We read each notice for the provision it is issued under before preparing the response.
Who needs help with an income tax notice?
You should get help if you have received any of these:
- An intimation showing a tax demand or a lower refund than you claimed
- A notice about a mismatch between your return and AIS or Form 26AS
- A defective return notice asking you to correct your ITR
- A notice asking why you did not file a return despite high-value transactions
- A demand outstanding from an earlier year shown on the portal
- A notice to produce documents or explain the source of a deposit or purchase
How does our notice reply process work?
-
1
Read the notice
Day 0Share a copy or portal screenshot. We identify the type, the provision, the year and the response deadline, and tell you how serious it is.
-
2
Find the cause
Day 0–1We compare your filed return with AIS, Form 26AS and your records to see where the difference came from.
-
3
Collect proof
Day 1–3We send a specific list: bank statements, sale deeds, rent receipts, Form 16 or investment proofs, depending on the issue.
-
4
Draft the reply
Day 2–4We prepare a clear written response with computations and annexures, and walk you through it before filing.
-
5
File and track
Day 3–5We file the reply on the portal, share the acknowledgement and track the outcome. If a revised or updated return is needed, we file that too.
Which documents are needed to reply to a notice?
The documents depend on the notice. These are the usual items:
| Document | Salaried / individual | Business / professional |
|---|---|---|
| The notice | Copy from the portal or email, with the DIN | Same |
| Filed return | ITR and acknowledgement for that year | ITR, computation and audit report if any |
| Department data | AIS, TIS and Form 26AS for the year | Same |
| Income proof | Form 16, interest certificates, rent agreement | Books of accounts, sales register, GST returns |
| Transaction proof | Sale or purchase deeds, broker statements | Invoices, contracts, bank statements |
| Portal access | e-filing login or OTP when needed | Same, or DSC for companies |
How long does a notice reply take?
Most notices can be answered within 2–5 working days once documents are in. These factors add time:
- Notices covering several years or several transactions
- Missing records, such as purchase deeds of an old property
- Business notices that need books of accounts to be reconstructed
- A response deadline that requires an adjournment request first
From you, we need the notice as soon as it arrives, the documents on our list, and access to the portal or OTPs when we file. Book a consultation call to discuss your case.

Common mistakes when replying to a notice
- Ignoring the notice. No reply can lead to the department deciding the matter on the information it has.
- Replying without checking AIS. The department already has your AIS data; a reply that contradicts it creates new questions.
- Missing the deadline. Each notice states a response time; extensions must be requested before it expires.
- Sending incomplete proof. Partial documents usually lead to a second notice.
- Paying a demand without checking. Some demands arise from processing errors and can be corrected through rectification.
| Item | Usual rule |
|---|---|
| Response time | As stated in the notice, often 15–30 days |
| Rectification request | Can be filed on the portal for apparent mistakes in processing |
| Appeal against an order | Within the time stated in the order, usually 30 days |
| Interest on unpaid demand | Charged monthly until paid |
