What is GST return filing?
A GST return is a statement filed on the GST portal that reports what you sold, what you bought, the GST you collected and the GST you paid. The government uses these returns to work out how much tax you owe after setting off input tax credit, the GST you already paid on business purchases.
Most regular taxpayers file two returns. GSTR-1 lists your sales invoice by invoice, so your buyers can see them in their own GSTR-2B. GSTR-3B is a summary return in which you pay the net tax. Small taxpayers can choose the QRMP scheme and file quarterly while paying tax monthly.
Composition dealers file a quarterly payment statement, CMP-08, and an annual return, GSTR-4. Larger businesses also file an annual return, GSTR-9, and in some cases a reconciliation statement, GSTR-9C.
Late returns attract a late fee for each day of delay and interest on tax paid late. Repeated non-filing can lead to blocked e-way bills and cancellation of registration.
Who needs to file GST returns?
You need to file GST returns if you hold a GST registration. This includes:
- Regular taxpayers, whether trading, manufacturing or providing services
- Small businesses opting for the QRMP scheme (quarterly returns, monthly payment)
- Composition dealers such as small shops and restaurants
- Businesses with no sales in a period, who must still file nil returns
- E-commerce sellers, whose sales also appear in the marketplace’s TCS returns
- Businesses that deduct TDS or collect TCS under GST
How does our GST return filing process work?
-
1
Data collection
Monthly or quarterlyYou share sales and purchase invoices on WhatsApp, email or from your billing software by a fixed date each period.
-
2
Sales return (GSTR-1)
Day 1We check invoice details, HSN summaries and B2B buyer GSTINs, then file GSTR-1 before its due date.
-
3
ITC reconciliation
Day 1–2We match your purchase register with GSTR-2B and flag suppliers who have not filed, so you claim only eligible credit.
-
4
Tax computation
Day 2We compute net tax after credit and send you the payment amount and challan before the GSTR-3B due date.
-
5
Summary return (GSTR-3B)
Day 2–3After payment, we file GSTR-3B, share the filed copies and log the next due date for your reminder.
Which documents do we need for GST returns?
We set up a simple monthly checklist. These are the usual items:
| Document | Regular / QRMP taxpayer | Composition dealer |
|---|---|---|
| Sales records | All tax invoices, export invoices, and credit or debit notes | Total turnover for the quarter, bills of supply |
| Purchase records | Purchase invoices with supplier GSTIN | Purchase summary, especially from unregistered suppliers |
| Expenses with GST | Rent, professional fees, freight and other bills with GST | Not required for credit |
| Bank statement | Business account statement for the period | Business account statement for the quarter |
| Marketplace reports | Sales and TCS reports from Amazon, Flipkart and others | Not applicable for most |
| Portal access | GST login, or OTP on the registered mobile | GST login, or OTP on the registered mobile |
How long does GST return filing take?
With complete data, each period’s returns are usually filed within 1–2 working days. These factors add time:
- Large invoice volumes without a sales register or billing software export
- Suppliers who have not filed, causing ITC mismatches in GSTR-2B
- Credit notes and sales returns that were not recorded during the month
- Pending returns from earlier periods that must be filed first
From you, we need sales and purchase data by the agreed date each period, quick confirmation of the tax amount, and timely payment of the challan. Book a consultation call to discuss your case.

Common GST return mistakes, late fees and due dates
- Claiming ITC not shown in GSTR-2B. Credit claimed beyond what suppliers have reported can lead to notices, reversal and interest.
- Mismatch between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. Sales reported in one return must match the other; differences are flagged by the portal.
- Skipping nil returns. Late fees apply even when there is nothing to report.
- Wrong buyer GSTIN in GSTR-1. Your customer cannot claim credit, and you may need to amend the return.
- Ignoring the annual return. GSTR-9 is often missed by small businesses that file monthly returns on time.
| Return | Usual due date |
|---|---|
| GSTR-1 (monthly) | 11th of the next month |
| GSTR-1 (QRMP, quarterly) | 13th of the month after the quarter |
| GSTR-3B (monthly) | 20th of the next month |
| GSTR-3B (QRMP, quarterly) | 22nd or 24th of the month after the quarter, depending on state |
| CMP-08 (composition) | 18th of the month after the quarter |
| GSTR-9 (annual) | 31 December after the financial year |
| Late fee and interest | Late fee per day of delay, capped; interest on late tax payment |
