What is GST registration?
GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is the indirect tax charged on most sales of goods and services in India. GST registration gives your business a GSTIN, a 15-digit number linked to your PAN and state. With it you can legally charge GST on invoices, claim credit for GST paid on purchases, and sell across state lines or on marketplaces.
The application is filed online on the GST portal in two parts. Part A verifies your PAN, mobile number and email. Part B collects business details, the place of business, bank account, partners or directors and the goods or services you deal in, identified by HSN or SAC codes.
After filing, the applicant completes Aadhaar authentication. A GST officer reviews the application and either approves it, raises a query, or orders a physical verification of your premises. Once approved, the registration certificate can be downloaded from the portal.
Registration is not a one-time event. From the date you are registered, returns have to be filed on schedule even in months with no sales, so it helps to understand the compliance before you apply.
Who needs GST registration?
You need GST registration if any of these apply to you:
- Your aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in a financial year (Uttar Pradesh limits).
- You sell goods to buyers in another state (inter-state supply of goods).
- You sell through e-commerce marketplaces such as Amazon or Flipkart.
- You are required to pay tax under reverse charge, or deduct or collect tax at source under GST.
- You are a casual taxable person, for example setting up a stall at an exhibition in another state.
- Your business buyers ask for a GST invoice so they can claim input tax credit, even if you are below the limit (voluntary registration).

Which documents are required for GST registration?
The exact list depends on your business type. We send a checklist for your case after the first call.
| Document | Proprietor | Partnership / LLP / Company |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor | PAN of the entity; PAN and Aadhaar of partners or directors |
| Photograph | Passport-size photo of the proprietor | Photos of partners or directors |
| Constitution proof | Not required | Partnership deed, LLP agreement or certificate of incorporation |
| Business address | Electricity bill plus rent agreement or ownership proof | Same; plus NOC from the owner if the premises are not owned |
| Bank proof | Cancelled cheque or bank statement | Cancelled cheque or statement in the entity’s name |
| Authorisation | Not required | Board resolution or authorisation letter for the signatory |
How long does GST registration take?
Most applications with clean documents are approved within 3–7 working days. These factors add time:
- Address proof that does not match the electricity bill or rent agreement
- A query from the officer that needs a written clarification
- An order for physical verification of the premises
- Aadhaar authentication not completed, which can trigger biometric verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra
From you, we need clear scans of the documents, access to the mobile number and email used on the application for OTPs, and quick replies if the officer asks for anything. Book a consultation call to discuss your case.

Common GST registration mistakes and penalties
- Mismatched address proof. The address on the electricity bill, rent agreement and application must match, or a query is likely.
- Wrong HSN or SAC codes. Incorrect codes lead to wrong tax rates on invoices and problems later in returns.
- Registering too late. Registration must be applied for within 30 days of becoming liable. Late registration can lead to tax, interest and penalty on past sales.
- Not filing nil returns. Registered businesses must file returns even with no sales; missed returns attract late fees and can lead to cancellation.
- Not displaying the GSTIN. The GSTIN must be shown on the name board at your place of business and on every invoice.
| Item | Usual rule |
|---|---|
| Turnover limit, goods (UP) | ₹40 lakh in a financial year |
| Turnover limit, services (UP) | ₹20 lakh in a financial year |
| Time to apply after becoming liable | Within 30 days |
| Penalty for not registering | 10% of tax due or ₹10,000, whichever is higher |
| Composition scheme limit (goods) | ₹1.5 crore turnover in the previous year |
Regular GST vs composition scheme: which suits you?
Small traders often have a choice between the regular scheme and the composition scheme. The right one depends on your buyers and margins.
| Point | Regular scheme | Composition scheme |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Businesses selling to other registered businesses | Small shops and restaurants selling mainly to consumers |
| Tax rate | Normal GST rates on each sale | A fixed low rate on turnover |
| Input tax credit | Available on purchases | Not available |
| Collect GST from customers | Yes, shown on the invoice | No; issue a bill of supply |
| Inter-state sales | Allowed | Not allowed for goods |
| Returns | GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly or quarterly | CMP-08 quarterly and GSTR-4 yearly |
